SR500 build of a contemporary scrambler.

I am starting the build of a contemporary scrambler, based on a Yamaha SR500 from 1983.
The basis is a pretty much standard SR500. The goal is to try to get as close to the looks of KEDO's b-track as possible. I like it's fresh looks with a rough edge. All this on a very low budget.

The starting point.

The objective.
I think it's gonna be a very nice winter.

Winter came early this year, couldn't wait when I got the tires and springcovers from KEDO.
I've been working on the bike a couple of times this week.
Things I did are; spray-painting several parts wich weren't powdercoated. Like footrests and rear drumbrake. Also the rearsprings got a neoprene jacket and the rearfender I have shortened. Frontfender taken of for remodeling or another one. The new tire on the rearwheel (actually i didn't do that myself. I went to a bikeshop to let them do it.
Here are some pictures.

This weekend (22 september 2012)I had my front tire put on the wheel. It is beginning to look like a scrambler

.

I went to Veterama in Manheim to scavenge for parts for the bike, found some nice pieces. A rearfender for only 10 euro's witch I can cut up for exercise. Some brake parts for a other set of spoked wheels I got lying around.

This weekend (october 20th) I've been working on the forks. Sanding, primer and lacker, Iwas lucky because the weather was specially good. I also cut the rearfender the way I want it to be. I thought I had to use the grinding wheel for the steel but tried the gig saw and it worked wonders.

It has been a wile since I wrote about the project, but I have been working on it every once in a while.
The buddyseat has been taken care of, at this moment it is at the upholstery-firm. I can't wait to get it back.
These are the fabrics I am using for it.

The front changed from one huge headlight to a set of two smaller one's, one bates-style headlight with a smaller aftermarket fog-lamp (actually for car use).

To keep track of all useble ideas I keep them close, on the wall in the shed.
And ofcourse there are some speedholes for weightsaving (haha) as well as looks.

Been working on the gastank, stripping the paint and kind of polishing it (steelbrush, cause it needs to rust after paint). I used paintstripper and a stanley-knife. It took me two nights to get the original paint off.

A bit of digital design in a mostly analog project, photoshop for tank design, honouring the classic Yamaha decals. With some own ideas mixed up to the final design. It's gonna be a bare rusted tank with the black and blue paintscheme on de sides.

The licenseplate will move to the side of the bike, the sidemount is good as ready, stainless steel with duo lights.

  2. Hoi Joost,

    groet Koen.

  3. Hi Koen! This is a great build! I am wondering, what meter is that you used? It looks like it does both tach and speedo! Cheers!
